The Writers Strike Is All My Fault

advertisement

I should fess up right now: It's probably my fault that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is on strike. Sorry about that.

There is no question that digital media has changed the landscape for writers. There was a time when a writer in a world that wasn't totally online could sell so-called "first North American serial rights" and then resell their content in another jurisdiction.

In the modern Internet era, where there are no borders and an increasing amount of content sharing between different media types, writers need to have contracts that span the global community and cover all the various media forms now in use.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Does this author put into words why many of us seed, feed and nurture the Vines?

What writers strike? Strike? Never heard of such a thing. Writer's block, yeh, sometimes but never strike. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the talking heads went on strike? I wish the bush administration would go on strike. Anything to allow the rest of us to enjoy our freedoms without taking advantage of others to pay for what we do freely.

Don't get me wrong. Writers can be worth money. Their product can be worth money. A few will always be able to maintain a vocation by writing. But the rest of us will be right out here giving free handouts to anyone who asked because to us writing is so much more than a source of income.

heh heh. what strike indeed!

The first objective of a genuine writer would always be just that - to write. Some turn it into a revenue stream. But the vast majority of writers do not. Therein lies the beauty for readers. You never know what you may uncover through reading an undiscovered source.

Good job for Maggie Thatcher to come and curb the power of unions. New Labour would never have been born without that!

A very valid point.

I is my fault that the writers are on strike.

I stopped going to the movie theaters when the combination of crappy movies and the lack of respect of the audience just overwhelmed my ability to enjoy the 'entertainment' especially combined with the $8 tickets, $4 sodas, and $3 reheated popcorn from bags.

Movies are going to DVD very soon after being in the theater now, some even go to DVD immediately.

I found that there is no line for the bathroom, any mess there is mine and the performance can be halted if I need to attend to that business.

The performance is scheduled when I want it to be, I can skip the trailers (why are they trailers if they cone out BEFORE the movie?), and be asleep before I would have left the parking lot after it is over. I do not have HBO or any other such channel because I can watch the performance when I want and rarely play the same one over and over for a month at a time.

Hey, Dr Know. Not that I wanna get into an argument with you. But it really is MY fault. For the very reasons you just listed. Perhaps we should share the blame. But I really want to take all the blame on this one. Feel very strongly about it:-)

Let's clear the air once and for all. It is certainly MY fault for being too eager to write so much and, with my articles taking over, the poor writers have been denied their share. I might as well own up! :o)

Gawd - now we really do have a huge big challenge. Everyone wants to claim fault for the writers strike. Safety in numbers?
